The 4-Baht Train to Lamphun
One of the simplest and most memorable experiences in Northern Thailand.
Sometimes the best travel experiences are not expensive tours or famous attractions.
Sometimes, they cost only 4 baht.
A few days ago (03 May 2026), I took the local train from ChiangMai to Lamphun, a small town about 30 kilometers south of the city.
The ticket price surprised me.
Only 4 baht per person.Less than a bottle of water.

— At Chiang Mai Railway Station, everything felt simple.
No crowds,
No rush, No complicated booking process.
Just a small ticket and a short wait.

— Ticket to Lamphun, only 4 baht each
The train itself was old but full of character.
There were no luxury seats, no air conditioning, and no modern design.
The windows stayed open, allowing the fresh air to flow through the carriage.

— Inside the carriage, locals and visitors share the same journey
As soon as the train started moving, the city slowly disappeared behind us.
The ride felt relaxed.
No one seemed to be in a hurry.

— 此刻他们心中想什么呢?是梦想、远方、还是未来?
What were they thinking as they gazed beyond the window?
Perhaps they were dreaming of places they had never seen, wondering what waited beyond the fields, temples, and distant hills. Maybe they were imagining their future, a life bigger than the small world they knew today. Or perhaps they were simply enjoying the moment, letting the passing scenery carry their thoughts wherever it wished.
At that age, the horizon always feels full of possibilities. Every road seems to lead somewhere magical, and every journey feels like the beginning of a new story.

The journey takes less than half an hour.
There are no dramatic landscapes or famous landmarks.
Just fields, small villages, and everyday life in Northern Thailand passing by outside the window.
Yet somehow, that simplicity is exactly what makes the trip special.
It reminds you to slow down.
To watch.
To appreciate ordinary moments.
